French Outreach Autumn 2012

Outreach on the PISCES project and the final PISCES guide in France saw a very busy autumn season. The project was well represented at five major marine events including the International Meeting on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity held in Brest, Brittany, under the patronage of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity. read more about 'French Outreach Autumn 2012'

Oil struck in Ireland’s Celtic Sea

In the summer 2011 edition of the PISCES newsletter (Issue 4), we featured an article on a seismic survey recently completed on the Barryroe Field in Ireland’s Celtic Sea. At this time, Providence Resources, an Irish based oil and gas exploration and production company, announced plans to drill ten exploration and development wells in the Celtic Sea. Protecting marine areas in France… we need more than ‘paper parks’

Since the early 1990s respected scientific articles have commonly reported that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are effective ecological and socio-economic tools to ensure the conservation of marine biodiversity and fisheries management. In recent years, scientists are generally more cautious and more specific when discussing the benefits of MPAs. UK Marine Strategy Framework Directive Consultation: last chance to have your say!

Celtic Sea Hake, working towards MSC labelling

The MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) eco-label communicates sustainable sourcing to customers and the market. The fishing industry, including retailers and processors in Spain are more aware of the need for sustainable fisheries. Spain and its industry is taking the first steps on this path. Companies like Eroski (the fourth biggest retailer in Spain) are working with WWF on sustainable sources for its seafood. Management approaches to oyster mortality in France

France is a major producer of oysters for consumption in the EU and this trade has deep historical roots along its Celtic Sea and western Channel coastlines. A recent interview with Mr Benoit Beliaeff, IFREMER Director of the Department of Biological Resources and Environment, put the spotlight back on the mortality of farmed Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) from several coastal locations in France. read more about 'Management approaches to oyster mortality in France'
